What a sewer lateral does
The building sewer collects wastewater from interior plumbing and carries it away from the property. Depending on the property, the line may run beneath a yard, driveway or slab. Access, depth, material and condition all affect the cleaning approach.
Common reasons sewer lines clog
Grease, wipes and other unsuitable materials, sediment, scale, root intrusion and damaged pipe sections can restrict flow. The visible symptom may be a slow toilet or a backup at a low drain, but the cause can be farther along the line.
Why camera inspection matters
A sewer camera can help locate the restriction and identify cracks, offsets, standing water, root entry or collapse. Jetting may clear deposits in a sound pipe, but it cannot restore a broken pipe or correct poor slope. Ask for findings to be explained before the cleaning method is selected.
Jetting and root intrusion
Water jetting may remove some root material from a pipe, but roots usually enter through an opening. If the defect remains, roots can return. A durable plan may require a targeted repair or replacement.
After cleaning
Flow testing and, where useful, a follow-up camera view can help show whether the restriction was removed. Keep a record of the pipe condition and any recommended repair. Related pages include main sewer line cleaning and drain cleaning.
