Signs of a main sewer line problem
Multiple slow fixtures, gurgling toilets, sewage odors, or wastewater emerging from a floor drain can point to a main-line restriction. These symptoms can have other causes too, so inspection matters. If sewage is backing up, stop using water and keep people and pets away from the affected area.
Inspection before cleaning
A technician may use a camera to locate the problem and assess pipe condition. The inspection can reveal grease, roots, scale, a foreign object, a belly, an offset joint or a collapsed section. Cleaning is only appropriate when the line can safely withstand the method.
Hydro jetting the main line
For suitable pipes, hydro jetting can help remove deposits along the pipe wall and restore flow. The equipment and nozzle must be matched to the pipe. If the line is broken or collapsed, repair may be required instead of—or before—cleaning.
Preventing repeat backups
Use drains as intended, avoid flushing wipes and hygiene products, dispose of grease correctly, and investigate repeat problems rather than relying on temporary clearing. See sewer line hydro jetting and preventative maintenance.
